A Midsummer Night's Dream at Scandic Malmen
Artist Brandy Kraft is debuting a series of photo-realistic oil paintings based on the beauty and frivolity Swedish tradition.
Kraft explains, "In my new midsummer hybrid wildflowers series I dive into the world of Swedish folklore and draw upon the traditional midsummer folk myth of the wildflowers and wonder- Why are we still telling little girls to dream of whom they will marry?”
"Throughout the series I explore the notions of this folkloric custom by setting it in a modern day context. It touches on themes of tradition and sexuality and calls into question the subtle underlying themes woven tightly into the fabric of society. The newly created hybrid wildflowers are my response to the beauty yet absurdity of this tradition.”
“The wildflowers are constructed from seven different species of wild flora that can be found in bloom in Sweden at the time of midsummer. I physically “marry” the different petals into a completely new hybrid wildflower," says Kraft.
